Live Streaming at Opera For All 

For the first time, the Bavarian State Opera is offering live streaming online of its Opera for All broadcast of Fidelio on 8 July. Opera lovers from all over the world will have the opportunity to experience Beethoven's opera of liberation in real time at www.staatsoper.de.

In the main roles, Anja Kampe is appearing as Leonore and Jonas Kaufmann as Florestan, and Adam Fischer will conduct the Bavarian State Orchestra. This year, the event will be introduced by TV presenter Thomas Gottschalk. The new production by the Spanish director Calixto Bieito premiered in the National Theatre in December 2010.

The performance of Fidelio on July 08 starts at 8 p.m. The live broadcast will start at 7.45 p.m. Central European Time with an introduction to the work by Thomas Gottschalk and theatre director Nikolaus Bachler.

Listen Now: Werther - Jonas Kaufmann, Sophie Koch, etc. Vienna State Opera.

I found this on Latvia Radio 3 (I was actually over there trying to discover if they were broadcasting LNO's Götterdämmerung this year.) As Werther is sung by Kaufmann. and as I am more than aware one or two of you are keen to hear him, I thought you might be interested.

My Latvian is not very good but I believe this is Vienna State Opera. production from January this year. The details can be found on Latvian Radio's home page here. The performance can be found on the Archive Page here. It was broadcast yesterday (18/06/2011) at 21:00 so you will then need to go here, scroll down and click either the Real Audio or Windows Media link (basically the time of broadcast under the relevant icon depending on which player you have installed). I have it running at the moment (although not a great fan of Werther) to test it and it seems fine (in windows media player). If you have any difficulty with this I include the direct links to playlist below. Clicking one of these will launch either Realplayer or Windows Media Player (depending on which one you click and have installed. Linux user I am sure can sort this out themselves) Starts at 10 minutes.

On 21May 2011 Kaufman gave a concert as part of The Reykjavík Arts Festival.

The star of the festival’s opening weekend was the German tenor Jonas Kaufmann. To an audience that included the president and minister of culture among other VIPs, he performed a relatively predictable selection of Romantic opera arias, mostly French and Italian, to show off his talents.

 Kaufmann can claim to be one of the world’s finest tenors, and he just keeps getting better. He has a particularly rich, chocolatey bottom register, but every part of his voice is firm and focused. His pianissimos are delicate, his fortissimos ringing, and he gives the impression of having power in reserve.

He was accompanied by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, which will now be based at Harpa along with Icelandic Opera. It has waited a long time for a home of its own – it previously played at the university cinema – and its enthusiasm was evident in its vigorous if not always highly disciplined playing under Peter Schrottner.

Will Jonas Kaufmann find his way through Spaghetti Junction - March 2012?

It is certain that to many Wagnerians - and others - "man of the moment" is Jonas Kaufmann. After his Lohengrin at Bayreuth and his more recent Siegmund at the MET he is certainly proving himself an astounding interpretter of Wagner. Perhaps (although I doubt it), certain people will stop insisting that the "golden age" of wagnerian performances ended in the 50/60's (delete your lest favorite).I'm presently listening to a recording of the MET broadcast of Die Walkure and have to say that Kaufmann is an outstanding Siegmund. There's a cleanness of line and a lyricism - together with the all important drama and emotion -  I have not heard in the role in a long, long time. Hopefully I will get to see him in the role soon

But in the meantime those living in or close to Birmingham, England will get the chance  to both  hear and see him live in 2012 when he he gives a concert performance at the Birmingham Symphony Hall on March 7 2012

And should you find yourself getting lost at Spaghetti Junction? Well, there is also his return to Wigmore Hall on June 10 2012 with an as yet unannounced recital.

Die Walkure: The Met Live 17:00 on BBC Radio 3

The Met's lavish production of Wagner's epic four-opera Ring reaches its second instalment, Die Walküre.
If only Top God and serial philanderer Wotan had been able to keep his trousers on, he would have saved himself a great deal of trouble. As it is, eleven of his children stalk the stage, causing havoc in one way or another. Nine of them have chosen the career path of warrior-maidens - the Valkyries - including their leader (and Wotan's favourite) Brünnhilde. The other two are a pair of twins, Siegmund and Sieglinde. They have chosen the rather more questionable use of their time to be lovers - a relationship not only incestuous but also adulterous, since Sieglinde is already married. Wotan sends Big Sister Brünnhilde to guard the lovers, much to the chagrin of his missus, Fricka. Chagrin, because her job (ironically enough considering what her husband has put her through) is Goddess of the Sanctity of Marriage. Throw in a magic sword and the usual disobedience a father can expect from his kids and, sure as eggs is eggs, there'll be tears before bedtime.
The no-expense-spared cast includes Bryn Terfel as the prodigious bed-hopper Wotan and Stephanie Blythe as his long-suffering wife, Fricka. Deborah Voight is the disobedient daughter and protective sister Brünnhilde, and Eva Maria Westbroek and Jonas Kaufmann the incestuous twins, Siegmund and Sieglinde. James Levine conducts.
